In order to gain access to the markets of the European Union, the products marketed must comply with a series of requirements regarding safety, health and environmental protection. The CE marking on a product guarantees that the minimum requirements of all applicable directives have been met.

Simple Pressure
Vessels
The Simple Pressure Vessels Directive (2014/29/EU) regulates vessels that are new on the Union market at the time of their placing on the market in order to ensure the protection of health and safety with regard to the risks of leakage or bursting.
The Directive covers, with certain exceptions, welded vessels manufactured in series, containing air or nitrogen, subjected to a pressure greater than 0.5 bar and not intended to be exposed to flame.
Parts and components may be made of unalloyed quality steel, unalloyed aluminium or annealed aluminium alloy. The Directive requires compliance by the manufacturer (or his authorised representative established in the Community) with the essential safety, design and manufacturing requirements, and requires conformity assessment of the simple pressure vessel by a European Notified Body.

Pressure Equipment
PED
The PED Directive (2014/68/EU - recast of 97/23/EC) is one of the EU regulations on the design, manufacture and distribution of pressure equipment, and concerns vessels, piping, safety accessories, pressure accessories, assemblies, subjected, during their operation, to a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar.
In order to assess the PED conformity, pressure equipment must be classified in different risk categories according to certain parameters (type of fluid contained, energy potential, pressure, volume, dimensions): depending on the risk category, it is necessary to choose the application module or conformity assessment procedure to be used among those provided for by the Directive.
The Directive requires the manufacturer (or his authorised representative established in the Community) to comply with the essential safety, design and manufacturing requirements, and requires conformity assessment of the pressure equipment by a European Notified Body.

Toys
Directive 2009/48/EC sets out the safety requirements for toys intended for children under 14 years of age.
It uniformly covers all mechanical-physical, flammability, electrical, hygiene and chemical requirements. It also identifies the various economic operators involved (manufacturer, authorised representative, importer or distributor) and codifies their specific obligations figure by figure.
The Directive imposes an obligation on the manufacturer to draw up an EC declaration of conformity and to prepare all the technical documentation when the toy is placed on the European market.
The Notified Body may examine, at the request of the manufacturer, this technical documentation in order to find out whether the toy is dangerous, considering for example its structural strength, the presence of small ingestible parts, the risk of flammability, the electrical or chemical risk, carrying out an EC conformity assessment on the product.

Machinery
In order to access EU markets, products placed on the market must comply with the requirements of safety, health and environmental legislation. The CE marking affixed to a product allows it to move freely within the European Economic Area (EEA) and is a sign that the manufacturer accepts responsibility for meeting the essential requirements of all applicable directives. Depending on the products and the relevant directives, the intervention of a Notified Body may be mandatory: Apave Italia CPM is a European Notified Body for both the EC Type Examination and the Total Quality Certification for :
- Presses, including bending machines, for the cold working of metals, with manual loading and/or unloading, whose movable working elements may have a stroke greater than 6 mm and a speed greater than 30 mm/s
- Injection or compression plastics-moulding machines with manual loading or unloading
- Injection or compression rubber-moulding machines with manual loading or unloading
- Manually loaded household refuse collection buckets equipped with a compression mechanism
- Vehicle liftsDevices for the lifting of persons or of persons and goods, having a hazard of falling from a vertical height of more than 3 metres
The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which came into force on 29 December 2009, ensures the free movement of machinery and defines the safety and health requirements to which machinery is subject when it is first placed on the market and put into service. These requirements apply to the design, manufacture, installation, use, maintenance and decommissioning of machinery.
The Directive covers machinery, interchangeable equipment, safety components, lifting accessories, chains, ropes and belts, mechanical transmission devices, partly completed machinery (e.g. a drive system).
The Directive distinguishes certain categories of machinery (defined in Annex IV) for which a particular certification procedure is necessary, identifies the essential safety requirements that the machinery must meet (Annex I) and codifies, depending on the type of machinery, the procedures that the manufacturer must follow to declare conformity and affix the CE marking.
For machines included in Annex IV of the Directive, conformity to the requirements can be established during assessment procedures carried out by a European Notified Body.
Lifts
The Lifts Directive 2014/33/EU applies to lifts intended for the transport of persons and goods, in permanent service in buildings and constructions, in order to allow their free movement within the European Union and ensure a high level of safety for users and maintainers.
A "lift" is defined as a lifting appliance which connects defined planes by means of a carrier moving along guides which are rigid and inclined at an angle of more than 15 degrees to the horizontal, or a lifting appliance moving along a perfectly defined course in space but not moving along rigid guides.
According to the Directive, lifts, before being placed on the market within the European Union, must undergo a conformity assessment procedure by a European Notified Body and be CE marked.

Construction products
The Construction Products Regulation 305/2011 covers all products (materials, products, systems, etc.) intended to be used as a permanent part of construction works (buildings and civil engineering works). These products must comply with essential requirements and performances, such as mechanical resistance and stability, safety in case of fire, hygiene, health and environment, safety and accessibility of use, protection against noise, energy saving and thermal insulation, sustainable use of natural resources for construction.
The manufacturer is also obliged to ensure the traceability of the products, so that they can be withdrawn or recalled from the market if they do not comply with the rules expressed by the CE marking.
